1 a. you would have to provide evidence of what and how a hybrid does differently from the HEMI so that it helps the environment
b. if its not neccessary to hurt the environment then dont and get the hybrid; if it is then et the hemi
c. i have to convince the other side that having a hemi is selfish. there is no real need to have the self satisfaction of owning a hemi while affecting the world which others are a part of.
d. one way some one can counter this is by ssaying that the world has been around for thousands of years and has been fine. just by them having their little car will not affect the entire world

2 a. you would have to gather evidence that shows how welfare works, who recieves it, and under what circumstance.
b. it is not neccessary for woman to have children just to recieve a payceck from the government
c. i have to show what will happen to the economy after we take away the welfare budget and invest it into more important things such as medical insurance etc.
d. the other side may propose that it is hard to raise a child by themselves so work will hard to get around to and without work there comes no money.

gender- i am a male. males happen to be more dominate and controling of their objects
age- i am a teenager. many people see teenagers as know it alls and dont care about anyone else. also that they do not show respect to authoritative figures
ethnic- i am a cuban puerto rican so hispanic in general. hispanics tend to be very family oriented and are loud at times. also hispanic males are very protective
religion- i am a christian. when people see that i am hispanic they automatically think i am catholic which is part wrong because there are certain things that i disagree with
political party- i am a republican. political stance can cause a lot of debate especially when you go against someones beliefs. in two of the main topics today in America people will see me as biased against gay marriage and abortion but i do have somewhat of a liberal stance towards them.

four leaf clover= good luck

these are just some symbols that people see on an average day. most people do not even realize it because they already know what it means unconciously. some stand out more than others because of their color. red seems to catch more attention and mean something more important while a sign that is white or yellow mabey not as important.

In doing both sides of desribing i saw that the way you sit down and put into words something that you are describing can change the readers view on the place. if i were to focus on all the positive aspects and even word some of the negative aspects as something positive the reader will see the atrium as a good and fun place. but then if i start describing it in a negative way and only say that it is uncomforatble and not a very friendly atmosphere then no one would like it. this tells me something. the next time i read some sort of critic on somethingi have to take into effect who is talking. they may not like one aspect and put the whole thing down, so i have to think for myself. also i think a paper would be more relliable if they include both sides of a story instead of being completely about only one side.

blog 12 atrium observation

In the fiu atrium there is a calm atmosphere. First is that it is a great pit stop for a student or professor between classes because there is not only food but also there are tables in which to sit and converse. While I sat there for half an hour I noticed that most people are not alone. In one table there were two friends sitting speaking in what seemed to be French and enjoying a casuel late lunch. There was a different two friends who were sitting just doing there own thing while killing time. The guy was finishing up a lab report and the girl was surfing myspace on her laptop. Another thing that is cool about what goes on is the professor student relationship. There seemed to be a professor who was having lunch with some students. I believe that they were having lunch with them for either a further explanation of lessons in his class or that they were interviewing him because he seemed to be the one talking more than the others. There was also a mom who worked at subway having lunch with her young son. He looked as if he was nine years old. They were talking to eachother with smiles and speaking about cartoons and kids stuff. Also what affected the mood of the atrium was the weather. Outside the wind was calm, not moving any trees, the clouds were gray and the campus was quiet. It was actually very relaxing. Another fact that was interesting is that it seems people pass by to just find a frind to talk to. While I was waiting there seemed to be about seven people who passed by and looked towards the tables as if looking for someone before leaving.

When I visited the fiu atrium it was for a negative apects because of the setting. When I got there it was a very dark and gloomy day. The sky was full of gray clouds and put a mellow mood in the air. When I first arrived I could see that everyone did not seem to really want to mingle. The tables in the atrium are arranged in sort of a circular shape. Well everyone that came to sit went straight to the outside tables on the rim instead of going for the inside tables. Not only did they sit on the rim but they also sat facing towards a wall or towards no one else that was sitting around them Also there were a lot of loners. By this I mean people who sat alone and did not look or act happy at all. They simply sat by themselves, were listening to their ipods, and were on their laptop or in their books. Also they had a very serious face on. So, while it was quiet and gloomy you can hear some people’s conversations. One lady was on the phone with what seems to be her boyfriend and was fighting with him over some plans for the weekend. Lastly, most of the people sitting around seem stressed out and studying. Some tables had about five large books on them that people were reading or waiting to read.

Conclusion 1
Through these two advertisements we can see how beer companies tend to focus on not only a certain gender but also the different mindsets of the gender. Bud Light is looking for a more relaxed and comfortable mindset that will just get up and grab a beer, and Dos Equis lures in a more stressed out man seeing the life he wishes he has.

Conclusion2
Advertising is not simply taking a picture of your product and hoping people will give it a try. It’s a psychological game. A game where the advertisers must get into people’s heads and not only grab but squeeze that part of their brain which will make a customer out of anyone. Only then have the advertisers accomplished their goal. Their goal of making money through their products.

in my first conclusion i more of summed up the paper. so i tried to change it up a little bit by writting a more general conclusion. the first one responded directly to my introduction and body paragraphs and almost just restated what was already formally said. in my second conclusion i talked about advertising in general. i talked about what makes a good advertisement and what the goal of an advertisement is. so by taking this different approach i thought it would be a change from the traditional conclusions which alwasy say the same thing and have the same formula. the formula of restating your these, then talking about your major points, and then finishing with a closing statement. I am hoping that this adds a little more touch to the paper' however i am not sure if it really answers the "so what?" question.

blog 10

How popular is beer in America? Well, as of July more than half of the Americans asked answered that they love beer. Some happen to love it so much that they have claimed it as their favorite beverage. Even those late teenagers who are not allowed to drink beer legally can not wait to buy their first six- pack when they turn twenty- one. With bars opening in any available space in almost any town, beer must be a beverage of choice. However, not everyone drinks. Its has been proven that most people to drink alcoholic beverages come from middle and upper class income while people with lower class incomes tend not to drink. This is understandable considering beer is more of a luxury than a necessity. People drink beer to wind down after a long day at work or to feel more sophisticated when out on the weekends or to even just get the full enjoyment of watching the game on a Sunday afternoon. The advertisements of Dos Equis and of Bud Light both explain what they believe the beers purpose is, and target similar yet different audiences.
The advertisement of Dos Equis is composed of a main picture with a short statement centered towards the top. Leaving out this much helpful statement, the view first looks upon the main and center object, the man. The man is not a young, happy or good looking man. He is a sophisticated, gray haired man with a thick yet groomed grey beard looking straight at the camera with an expressionless tone. He seems to be in some up scale party with younger women in eye catching dresses sitting next to him. What man would not want to be sitting next to two women at a party with one completely interested in him? Any lower class man would not mind switching places with the man and feel powerful and successful for once. Plus he has a refreshing tall beer sitting in front of him. When a man looks at this picture he will place himself in this mans shoes, in the place where he will feel powerful and wanted with everything he wants. But wait. This mans face leads to another conclusion.
As the man is sitting there he has a cold face on. He almost looks as if he does not want to be there. Considering this leads to the statement printed at the top in fancy letters. The statement reads “on happy hour, happy hour is the HOUR AFTER everyone from happy hour has LEFT.” Viewers can take this two ways. The first is that the man has had all of his coworkers leave and is now socializing with new people, or, what his facial expressions agree with, that he is waiting for everyone to leave him alone so that he can have his true happy hour by himself with his beer. Now the viewer sees that it is cool to drink by yourself. There is no need for a fancy upper classman to need people around him for him to feel more of himself. All this man needs is his Dos Equis.
The advertisement from Bud Light uses a similar layout but targets a different audience. This advertisement is for more of the simple guy who likes to kick back and watch a sports game while holding a “cold one.” Here there is a very attractive tanned skinned woman holding a beer with her hair leaning off to the side and her hair swaying perfectly. Most definitely this is a sexual based advertisement. It has often been said that “sex sells” and with a woman like this one they succeed. This woman’s big lips, enticing eyes, and low cut dark pink top definitely draw in a man’s attention. A very important aspect of the picture is the background of the woman. Men are interested in certain types of women, and there are plenty of different types. This woman does very well in suiting most of them. Her skin color is best described as a tan because she looks as if she could be a light tone of black or white with a nice tan. With this questionable skin color she could attract blacks, whites and even Hispanics. This being the case she relates to a broader group of men.
Another aspect of the Bud light advertisement is the statement on the bottom of the advertisement. Here reads, “ life is good…Live the good life with Bud Light.” Although the meaning is pretty self explanatory people often fail to see the second affect it has on the advertisement. The first is that they are saying the beer makes life good, and the second could mean that Bud Light could take life to another step and if you drink it you can make your life better with a girl as attractive as the one in the picture. Once again, sex is used.
Even though both advertisements mainly concentrate on men, they concentrate on two different kinds of men. The man in the Dos Equis advertisement is dressed in a more professional and high class suit which pertains more to lower class men who want to feel as powerful. Targeting the type who hopes to climb the social ladder and become someone. It’s telling them to drink Dos Equis to feel closer to where they want to be. While the bud light advertisement seems to focus more on the laid back man who doesn’t take life too seriously. Also, it targets the type of guy who drinks beer. This advertisement is more to reinforce their crave for Bud Light and causes them to either want a beer right there on the spot or for them to drink more frequently.
Through these two advertisements we can see how beer companies tend to focus on not only a certain gender but also the different mindsets of the gender. Bud Light is looking for a more relaxed and comfortable mindset that will just get up and grab a beer, and Dos Equis lures in a more stressed out man seeing the life he wishes he has.

the main thing i am going to re-see is the description. i am going to go more in depth on the advertisement because the first time i only spoke about things the advertisers knew were in the ad and left out everything that looks as if it were a coincidence. i know that have to maintain the mentallity that nothing is left to chance. i also know that my conclusion is very weak, so when i feel more confident about my paper and how it looks i'll concentrate on a well written conclusion. the last thing i am going to re-see is the orginazation. i am going to try and imply the same strategy as the author in the text had so that it will flow bettter and so that i have a formula to follow instead of writting loosely. a lot of sentences also were placed in wrong places. i noticed they would have more effect if i placed them in different places and it would also correspond with the orginazation better.

The audience I was imagining in my literacy narrative was my peers but most importantly my professor. The one thing that I really did try to have was an attention grabber. I introduced my paper with a story of sitting in a class. The reason I chose this story was because my targeted audience was in a class, they could visualize it better. I then reveal the topic of the paper not in the first paragraph but in the second. However I did not completely talk about everything I was going to talk about. I more of got the reader for the topics to come and only introduced the next paragraph. So I basically wrote that I switch languages without knowing but I never say how often or what exactly I mean. I leave that for the rest of the paper. I think I provided enough information in the introduction. If anything I believe I could have added more in a different part of the paper. The strategy I used was the use of a story, either funny or suspenseful, to grab the reader and then cause them to want more of an explanation. For my title I am not to confident about. I thought I could come up with something more grabbing and original. However, it was my first time really looking for a good title so I will know how to approach finding a title if I decide to revise it.

This is an artwork by Botticelli. Here he depicts a famous story in the Bible where Jesus is going to pray in the garden before he is arrested. Another fact that goes along with the story are the three disciples sleeping at the base of the garden. The way that Botticelli separates Jesus from the rest of the men is by the light halo on his head. An interesting fact about Jesus is that he was painted with red garments. The significance is that red could represent blood and he was about to spill a lot of it. Probably the most interesting aspect of the painting would have to be the angel. What gender is the angel? Botticelli looks like he tried to not give a gender to the angel because it has physical features that could fit a male or female. Also, the angel gives off a slightly negative vibe. The angles wings are black instead of yellow or gold, some bright color.
Botticelli guides the viewer’s eyes down the painting. The painter first sees the angel in the sky reaching out its arms. Then the viewer goes down the body of Jesus down the path. At the end of the path you come across the final object of the painting which is the three disciples sleeping. One last interesting thing of the painting is the placement of Jesus’ hands. If you look closely you can see that they are almost in the position of having bonds on them.

The first thing to catch the eye of anyone looking at this advertisement would most likely be the soldier’s helmet and the colors. What really sets the mood of the picture is the lighting. The way the color transitions from a cold, dark blue on the left top corner to a warming yellow- orange and how the sky has the same effect from top to bottom. This gives off a feel of comfort or of relief. What is so odd is that this is contradictory of what most people know of Halo. Most people know that the Halo games are action packed and far from relieving. Even the Mature rating in the bottom left hand corner implies this. However, the way the sun is setting and giving of those warming beams of light give the viewer a feel of completion. A feel that the quest is complete, implies otherwise. Also, there is what looks like ruins in the background which gives off the impression of “mission complete.”
Probably the most impressive aspect of the advertisement is the soldier and his weapon. If the viewer were to give a closer look at the suit and gun of the soldier they would notice that they seem worn out, as if they have been through a plentiful amount of combat. But more interesting is the helmet. The picture never shows the man’s face, only the orange visor. This leaves the man’s facial expression to the viewer’s imagination. Now the viewer becomes curious and may want to actual experience the conflict with the soldier to then gain an understanding what he or she could be thinking and what sort of face they might have in the picture. Whether its one of relief of completion or of sadness due to failure. This then leads to playing the game.

Revision Process

The revision process is probably the second most important step in writing any paper. What is a paper if you don’t go back and make sure it is right. The main thing that you get out of revising is correcting simple mistakes. Most of the time people write something that sounds good in their head but doesn’t make sense if someone else reads it. A way to test this is by reading the paper out loud to yourself; however, the best way to revise a paper is to read it to other people. This way you get others opinions that will help your paper while making sure it makes sense. The way I am going to try to apply the process to my own paper is to simply make the paper better. Of course I am going to try and spot grammatical errors and such but there is more than that. With the first draft I have the basic concepts and outline for the paper. Now I can concentrate on putting more tension in places that seem to get boring. Also I am able to put a story where I believe the paper needs an example of a point or just some more detail. The main way that I will apply revisions is by reading my own paper in the reader’s point of view. I will try to pinpoint when things get boring or unclear or even if it just does not help my subject. In all, I am going to focus on my paper being entertaining and not becoming a boring read

Magazine

In Sports Illustrated everything is about sports. The categories range from baseball to football and soccer to NASCAR. In the table of contents there are such titles as Motor Sports, Baseball, and To Shackle Shaq. After that, the writers do a very good job in pulling in the reader. On the next couple of pages are high resolution pictures that were taken during major sports events. When it comes to the actual length of the articles it depends on the significance. For example, the main article about Shaquile O’Neal is three pages long with another full page dedicated to a blown up picture of him; however, the other articles average about a page or page and a half. In these articles the writers do a good job in giving essential information to educate the reader about the person’s background or success to then add new information that has currently happened. In Derek Jeter’s article they give a comparison of his batting average now to what it used to be. Also, they compare his homerun count to the homerun leader’s count.
Of course this magazine is going to target men. It would be a correct assumption to say that a greater amount of men are interested in sports than women. For this reason all the advertisements are directed towards men. On several pages there are advertisements for tucks and sports cars. There are even pages for male weight loss supplements and cholesterol pills.

Literacy Narrative Brainstorm

The idea for my literacy narrative is not certain but it may revolve around football. My coaches, teammates, and family will be important in this topic. Even though I had many coaches probably one will stand out. He was my position coach. The main reason that he is significant to me is that he is the one that taught me the game of football. He taught me tendencies, reads and how to be a leader. This guy was a short, white haired marine. He loved to yell and run around with the same patriot football hat while coaching us at the top of his lungs. Also, there were my parents. The ones who went to every game and no matter how I played were always there for me. They stayed positive while I was negative and stayed strong when I wanted to give up. Right next to them was my brother who took the time during every game to do me a favor. He took film of me playing from the stands with our miniature sized camera so that I would have memories of my games. However, the most important people were my teammates. These were the ones that made the experience worth everything. From fooling around in the locker to hit- its in football camp, we were all in the ride together. Definitely my teammates forwarded my progress in football. I will always remember the smell of the pads in the locker room and the looks on their faces when we were dead tired in the fourth quarter waiting for the final whistle to blow. Most of all I will have the friendships to remember.

Wind Power in Pacific Northwest

The first paragraph provides support for the main point that wind power is not reliable. By simply stating that wind power is not reliable the reader wouldn’t know that wind power cannot provide enough electricity when it is needed. For example, most people would not have made the connection that when there is no wind is the time when they need to cool their homes and that during a blizzard is when they need to heat their homes. Both of which require more energy than usual. Expanding the support in this way educates the reader and makes them aware of simple issues.
Paragraph two is centralized around the thesis of “there are major unsolved problems involved in the design of wind-generation facilities.” Leaving the thesis in this state without support really doesn’t say much at all. Almost everything has some faults yet can have plenty of good. As the paper is not intended for engineers the writer must enlighten us in some of the major faults. Supports such as, “ice storms causing damage to rotating blades” and “high winds in the area escalating the cost” show the reader that it really is not financially smart to place these facilities in the mountains where they are needed.
“The environmental impact of building thousands of wind towers would be enormous,” is probably the most obvious thesis. All the writer had to do was throw a bunch of numbers at the reader to show how many wind towers would be needed for efficiency. This paints a picture in the reader’s head of fields of wind towers which have destroyed acres of beautiful land.

journal entry 1

My favorite piece of writing that i have done would be my paper about Minoru Yamasaki’s twin towers of the World Trade Center. This was my research paper in junior year which I had to present in front of the class. We all had to choose an artist and one of their great projects in which to write about. So, I chose the lead architect for the twin towers, Minoru Yamasaki. What really prompted me to write this paper was how man could complete an enormous task of ascending a building one hundred and ten stories into the sky in 1970. A feat of this magnitude is hard enough to accomplish today with all of our advanced technology especially for what they ad beck then. Therefore, a structure this big most definitely became a symbol of strength to New York City and America. Even though they were knocked down, I would argue to say that they have become an even bigger symbol now that they have changed America in the twenty- first century.

Without a doubt, this research paper is written in closed form top-down thesis- based prose. Largely because this is where i believe i write the best. I am more comfortable writing in a planned out consistent form. Although i do try to write more and more in open form, i believe my papers are more scattered and incoherent when i do not follow a pre-meditated plan.
